City of Victor Harbor - Victor Viewpoint

Protecting the future of economic development and tourism

Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tram

The City of Victor Harbor committed to protecting the future of its iconic Horse Drawn Tram when it considered the findings of a broader review into council’s economic development and tourism services.

Council commenced a review process in 2013 to look into service levels and delivery options for all of its economic development and tourism functions including the South Australian Whale Centre, Visitor Information Centre, Mainstreet program, tourism marketing, economic development activities, festivals, events and Horse Drawn Tram.

The service review of the Horse Drawn Tram was expanded by Council in September 2015 to look further into operations of the service and to explore strategies to ensure it’s sustainability into the future.

In considering the findings of the review, council made a number of key decisions. The decisions establish a foundation for a continuing council profile in economic development and tourism with a greater emphasis on efficiency and performance disclosure.

Find out more about the economic development and tourism services review, including an outline of the recent decisions, on council’s website.

Outside Ideas appointed to deliver stage one of Mainstreet Upgrade

Stage 1 of the Mainstreet Upgrade

South Australian based company, Outside Ideas, has been appointed to deliver stage one of the Victor Harbor Mainstreet Precinct Upgrade.

Outside Ideas is a commercial landscaping and civil engineering firm that has been involved with a number of high profile projects including the Adelaide Oval Redevelopment and Adelaide Airport Landside Infrastructure Project.

Outside Ideas Director Aaron Superina said he is looking forward to being involved in the exciting project that is set to renew Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct.

“Victor Harbor is one of South Australia’s most iconic tourist destinations so it’s really exciting to be delivering the first stage of a first class project that will benefit visitors and local residents for many years to come”.

The first stage of the Victor Harbor Mainstreet Precinct upgrade involves the redevelopment of the Ocean Street and Coral Street intersection. Work is due to commence in May, and is expected to be complete in August.

The seven stage Mainstreet Precinct upgrade will be undertaken over a number of years, and will see Victor Harbor’s Town Centre transformed in to a vibrant place that reflects our heritage and celebrates our connection with the marine environment, particularly the Southern Right Whale.

Visit www.victor.sa.gov.au/mainstreetupgrade for more information about the project.

Transport service volunteer achievements recognised

SCOTS Volunteers

The Southern Communities Transport Scheme (SCOTS) held their annual volunteer barbecue on Sunday, 14 February 2016 at Toc H Hall and grounds.

The SCOTS annual barbecue is a great opportunity for the City of Victor Harbor and Alexandrina Council to recognise the outstanding and invaluable contributions of the SCOTS volunteers.

SCOTS has 45 volunteers who contributed over 9,000 hours of support in 2015 to provide over 10,000 trips to Adelaide and locally for transport disadvantaged people. Volunteers also assisted in the office, acted as attendants on the community bus, and assisted with vehicle cleaning and maintenance.

Seven volunteers were presented with recognition of service awards including Liz Stenner and Peter Willis for five years of service; Graham Stephens, Bob Weir and Neville Williss for ten years of service; and Russell Parkes and Des Schirmer for 15 years of service.

A new bicycle plan for Victor Harbor

Riding along the Encounter Bikeway

Council is updating its Bicycle Plan, and is asking the community to share their thoughts and experiences relating to cycling in Victor Harbor.

The City of Victor Harbor encourages bike riding, and supports cycling as it links with the strategic objectives of promoting a healthy lifestyle and protecting our environment. By updating the plan, Council aims to ensure that pedestrians and cyclists enjoy easy and safe access throughout the council area.

The first stage of updating the Bicycle Plan is to gather information from the community. To share your thoughts complete the online survey or collect a hard copy from the council office (1 Bay Road, Victor Harbor).

The survey will close at 5pm on 31 March 2016.
