Country Cabinet in Victor Harbor

The Southern Fleurieu's three councils joined forces on Thursday, 8 October 2026 to present a united vision for the region's future during the SA Government's Country Cabinet visit to Victor Harbor.

Mayors and CEOs from the City of Victor Harbor, Alexandrina Council and the District Council of Yankalilla met with the Premier and Cabinet to discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with the region's projected growth. They advocated for a strong partnership with the State Government to ensure housing, roads, transport, community facilities and essential services needed to support future residents are planned and delivered together while maintaining the qualities that make the Southern Fleurieu a special place to live and work.

Under the Greater Adelaide Regional Plan, the Southern Fleurieu’s population is projected to grow from around 55,000 people to between 81,000 and 90,000 by 2051. The region is also expected to accommodate around 25,000 additional homes, representing approximately eight per cent of planned housing growth across Greater Adelaide.

The councils welcomed the opportunities this growth could create, including greater housing choice, a larger workforce, stronger local economy and improved services. However, they emphasised that new housing must be supported by timely investment in transport, water, wastewater, roads, community facilities and other essential infrastructure.

During the Country Cabinet event the Council was also able to speak with government representatives about a range of issues important to our community including road safety and maintenance, freight routes, community support services, investment attraction and the strong foundation of collaboration established between the councils of the Southern Fleurieu.

It was an absolute privilege to welcome the Premier and his team to our city.  Country Cabinet was a valuable opportunity to bring government and community together, showcase our region and have important conversations about the future.

The City of Victor Harbor looks forward to building on those discussions and continuing to work with the State Government to deliver positive outcomes for our community.
