Information or Briefing Sessions

Open and transparent council and committee meetings underpin representative democracy and ensure public confidence in council’s decision-making processes.

Information and Briefing Sessions provide a valuable opportunity to enhance Council decision making by providing opportunities for members to become better informed on issues, enhance their local government knowledge and seek further clarification.

Section 90A of the Local Government Act 1999 provides that Council or the Chief Executive Officer may arrange for the holding of an Information or Briefing session where more than one (1) member of the Council or Council Committee is invited to attend or be involved in the session.  These sessions will be used for the sole purpose of discussing a matter that is, or is intended to be part of the agenda for a formal meeting of the Council or Council Committee.

All information and briefing sessions will be held in a place open to the public unless the session is one that Council or the Chief Executive Officer has declared will be held in confidence.

Council or the Chief Executive Officer will only declare that an Information or Briefing session will be held in confidence on a case by case basis, and the Council or Chief Executive Officer will only declare that a session will be held in confidence if it is a briefing relating to information or a matter of a confidential nature within the ambit of s90(3) of the Local Government Act 1999.

On the second Monday of each month, Council has resolved to hold an Information or Briefing Session (previously known as Informal Gatherings).  Details of the Information or Briefing Session will be published on Councils website at least three days prior to the session or as soon as practicable after the Council or Chief Executive Officer has declared to hold an Information or Briefing Session and will be generally chaired by the Chief Executive Officer or delegate.
