SA Whale Centre Marine Education Program
Marine Education Program Secured at the South Australian Whale Centre
The City of Victor Harbor has renewed its partnership with Fleurieu Marine Education, signing a two-year Memorandum of Agreement to continue delivering education programming at the South Australian Whale Centre.
Since 2022, Fleurieu Marine Education has provided educational experiences and guided tours for students, community groups and visitors, while also supporting whale sighting enquiries during the annual whale season from May to September.
Marine and environmental education has been delivered at the South Australian Whale Centre for more than 16 years, helping young people develop a deeper understanding of whales, local marine ecosystems and conservation.
Mayor Moira Jenkins said the partnership played an important role in the Centre's visitor and education offering.
"The South Australian Whale Centre is one of Victor Harbor's most iconic attractions, and this partnership ensures it continues to inspire curiosity, learning and environmental awareness in visitors to Victor Harbor.
"Fleurieu Marine Education has built a reputation for delivering engaging, hands-on experiences that connect visitors with the marine environment of Encounter Bay and the Fleurieu Peninsula.
"We are delighted to continue working together to help drive increasing visitation to Victor Harbor and through the South Australian Whale Centre."
Fleurieu Marine Education Directors Dr Ali Bloomfield and Ms Renee Newman welcomed the extension of the partnership.
"We are excited to be able to continue sharing our knowledge of the coast and marine environments of Victor Harbor and surrounding waters. We are passionate about helping people understand and connect with the marine environment around them.
"Through our partnership with the South Australian Whale Centre, we have the opportunity to engage children, families and visitors in meaningful learning experiences that encourage curiosity, discovery and stewardship of our oceans."
Dr Bloomfield and Ms Newman, both qualified marine scientists with extensive experience in marine education, founded Fleurieu Marine Education in 2022. They are now joined by Ian Milne, a respected local marine expert and retired teacher who played a key role in establishing Victor Harbor as a whale watching destination in the 1990s and was instrumental in the foundation of the South Australian Whale Centre.
The South Australian Whale Centre's purpose-built education space caters for groups of up to 30 participants and supports a range of interactive programs and guided tours tailored to different ages and learning needs.
The renewed agreement reinforces the City of Victor Harbor's commitment to supporting quality visitor experiences that promote awareness, appreciation and conservation of Victor Harbor's unique marine environment.
