Weeds and Pests
Weed control
While Council does conduct and organise weed control and spraying programs on public land from time to time, land-owners are also encouraged to take responsibility for the control of weeds on their own property and adjoining roadside.
There are a number of ways you can assist with weed control:
- Hand pulling
- Pour boiling water directly onto weeds
- Use a direct Weed Killer applicator (not spray)
- Lay any type of cardboard onto garden area, overlapping for no gaps, then thickly top with bark chips
- Mow frequently
- Slash property frequently
- Keep up fertiliser to encourage growth of the plant you desire
- Stock grazing e.g. poultry, alpacas etc.
Rabbit Control Program
Rabbits are a serious threat to our production and biodiversity. They can cause significant damage by eating native plants, out-competing native animals and digging warrens that cause erosion. Rabbits can also destroy crops, pastures and native vegetation, creating millions of dollars worth of damage.
With support from Landscape Hills and Fleurieu, the City of Victor Harbor will undertake a Rabbit Control Program in February 2024.
No weed spraying register
Should you wish to be on the "No Weed Spraying" register due to health reasons or because you wish to maintain land yourself, you may telephone 8551 0500 to be included on the register.
During a weed spraying program the "No Weed Spraying" register is handed to our contractors and staff to ensure that the registered properties and adjoining areas are not included in the spraying program.
Garzanias
Have you seen this in your neighbourhood?
The orange/yellow flower pictured here is a ‘Gazania’. This plant is now declared a noxious weed, as it spreads rapidly from seed.
Council is asking residents not to plant this particular plant as it is becoming an invasive weed along nature-strips and spreading into the coastal dunes. Council is currently undertaking a targeted removal program of this species on Council land including nature strips, in an effort to halt its spread.
There are many other species that are invasive weeds for our area. Council has a list of what is a weed and what is encouraged to be grown in our district that can be obtained from the City of Victor Harbor Civic Centre, 1 Bay Road, Victor Harbor.
Before planting anything on Council land, please contact us at 8551 0500 or localgov@victor.sa.gov.au.
