Community Garden and Nursery
The City of Victor Harbor is working towards the establishment of a new community garden and native plant nursery that will deliver lasting environmental and social benefits.
Project Overview
This project aims to create a community-led, sustainable and inclusive space that supports local food production, environmental education, social connection and biodiversity outcomes.
Council has been working closely with the Victor Harbor Community Garden Group and Biodiversity Victor Harbor, who have expressed interest in establishing vegetable gardens and a native plant production nursery respectively.
Location
Land has been secured at Martha Close (across from the Victor Harbor Men’s Shed) for the creation of the community garden and native plant nursery.
By the end of this project, the land is expected to feature:
- A functional, accessible and attractive community garden that accommodates a mix of individual plots, communal growing areas and accessible garden beds
- A medium-scale community nursery to support propagation, seed saving, and plant distribution
- Connections linking residential areas to the Inman River walking trail network
Timeline
Designs
Council has appointed experienced landscape architecture and urban design practice, Oxigen, to develop detailed designs for the site.
Oxigen will work closely with the Victor Harbor Community Garden Group and Biodiversity Victor Harbor throughout the design process.
It’s expected that design work will be complete by the end of 2026.
Construction
Construction is expected to commence in 2027, subject to budget deliberations and other factors.
Opening
Once construction is complete, Council will retain ownership of the land, with the Victor Harbor Community Garden Group and Biodiversity Victor Harbor managing site operations under a lease arrangement.
The community garden and nursery will be reserved for the exclusive use of the Victor Harbor Community Garden Group and Biodiversity Victor Harbor.
Other portions of the site (paths connecting to the Inman River walking trail network) will be accessible by the general public.
This is subject to final agreements with community groups and final site designs.
