Land Secured for Future Community Garden and Native Plant Nursery

Published 30th June 2026
The City of Victor Harbor has secured land at Martha Close, paving the way for the creation of a new community garden and native plant nursery.

The land purchase is the result of ongoing collaboration between Council, the Victor Harbor Community Garden Group and Biodiversity Victor Harbor, who have been working together to identify a suitable location to establish vegetable gardens and a native plant production nursery respectively.

The newly purchased land is expected to feature:

  • A functional, accessible, and attractive community garden that accommodates a mix of individual plots, communal growing areas, and accessible garden beds
  • A medium-scale community nursery to support propagation, seed saving, and plant distribution
  • Future connections linking residential areas to the Inman River walking trail network

Experienced landscape architecture and urban design practice Oxigen has been appointed to develop detailed designs for the site.

Oxigen will work closely with the Victor Harbor Community Garden Group and Biodiversity Victor Harbor throughout the design process to ensure the garden and nursery reflect the vision and operational needs of both organisations where possible.

Design work is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, enabling construction to commence in 2027, subject to budget deliberations and other factors.

City of Victor Harbor Mayor, Dr Moira Jenkins, said securing the land represented an important milestone for a project that has been years in the making.

“We’ve been working with both community groups for several years to understand their goals and identify a suitable location where they can expand their operations,” said Mayor Jenkins.

“This project is about creating a vibrant, community-led space where people can come together to learn, grow, share knowledge and build connections."

"The community garden and nursery will support local food production, environmental education and biodiversity outcomes, while also creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get involved."

“I’m very excited to see this land evolve into a thriving community asset for generations to come.”

Once construction is complete, Council will retain ownership of the land, with the Victor Harbor Community Garden Group and Biodiversity Victor Harbor managing site operations under a lease arrangement.
