Granite Island Causeway

The Granite Island Causeway has always been highly valued by our local community as it is the lifeline to Granite Island and relied upon by a number of businesses and tourist attractions.

Causeway

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) began construction on a new Causeway in March 2021 following a $43 million commitment to the project from the SA Government.

It was officially opened to pedestrians with City of Victor Harbor Mayor, Dr Moira Jenkins, cutting the ribbon on Wednesday 22 December 2021.

The new Causeway has three rest areas, improved seating and interpretive signage. It is also widely recognised for its incorporation of First Nations art, with Ngarrindjeri-Ramindjeri etching featuring along the entire length of the Causeway.

Further works were undertaken on the new Causeway in early 2022, to construct the new boat landing facility and to complete minor finishing works.

Causeway Plaza

In addition to the construction of a new Causeway, the project saw the redevelopment of the Causeway Plaza area where the Causeway is accessed. These works included landscaping, installation of new planter boxes and an increase in public seating.

Decommissioning of the old Causeway

Decommissioning of the old Causeway took place in 2022. Portions of the old Causeway have been retained at each land end and reopened as viewing platforms.

New Causeway Boat Landing

The new boat landing facility was opened to the public on 6 July 2022. Tourism operators can now collect passengers direct from the new Granite Island Causeway, following the opening of the new boat landing.

The new landing is positioned approximately halfway across the new causeway and can accommodate two vessels at the same time.
