Protecting Native Grass Meadows

Learn about the thoughtful practices behind Council's management of native grass meadows.

We're proactively conserving native grass meadows by leaving them un-mowed.

Kangaroo Grass is an example of a native grass that is found in various sites across Victor Harbor. It provides important habitat for birds, butterflies and lizards. It also offers environmental benefits including drought tolerance and fire retardance.

This type of grass drops its seed at the end of summer, so by leaving it un-mowed at this time of year, we increase the chances of successful regeneration.

Council's crew has recently undertaken training on identifying Kangaroo Grass meadows. This will ensure they can identify the meadows and leave them intact during routine maintenance of our parks, gardens and reserves.

This thoughtful management of our open spaces is part of our commitment to biodiversity and sustainability.
