Statement Regarding the Passing of Horse Drawn Tram Clydesdale, Albert

The City of Victor Harbor and the Victor Harbor Tramway team are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of much-loved Clydesdale horse, Albert, following a short illness.

Albert became unwell on Friday and received veterinary treatment. Despite the efforts of his carers and veterinarians, he passed away on Saturday morning. Veterinary advice has confirmed that tumours were the cause of his illness and subsequent passing.

About Albert

At 18 years of age, Albert was a valued member of the Horse Drawn Tram team for the past 13 years and held a special place in the hearts of staff, volunteers, drivers and visitors alike.

Known for his calm nature and gentle temperament, Albert played an important role in the tramway operation and helped train many new tram drivers. His steady presence and willingness to work made him a trusted member of the team.

Albert was also known for his unique personality. He famously disliked fishing rods and preferred not to wear winkers, as he enjoyed seeing everything happening around him. His kind nature and quiet confidence made him a favourite among all who knew him.

Albert's contribution to the Horse Drawn Tram experience and the joy he brought to residents and visitors over many years will be fondly remembered

Tramway Operations

The Horse Drawn Tram will continue to operate as normal. However, we ask the community to be mindful of the impact of Albert’s loss on the tramway staff and volunteers to whom Albert was a much-loved colleague and companion of many years.

The City of Victor Harbor extends its sincere thanks to everyone who cared for and admired Albert throughout his life and service.
