Beach Safety Update

Published 19th March 2025
Further update for Victor Harbor Community (25 March 2025).

Residents are urged to exercise caution on Fleurieu beaches as authorities investigate reports of dead marine life, beach foam, and health symptoms affecting the eyes and respiratory system.

The City of Victor Harbor is working closely with key agencies, including the Department of Environment and Water (DEW), the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA), and SA Health.

25 March 2025 Update

The EPA has identified Karenia mikimotoi as the cause of the current algae bloom, likely due to a marine heatwave with sea temperatures 2.5°C higher than usual.

While this algae is NOT toxic to humans, exposure may cause symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, throat irritation, itchy or burning eyes, and red or irritated skin. Swallowing affected water could lead to nausea, upset stomach or flu-like symptom.

If you experience any symptoms, rinse off with clean water, as they should subside once exposure stops.

SA Health advice is to avoid contact with water that appears discoloured or has an unusual smell.

Status of Local Beaches

🚫 Waitpinga Beach and Parsons Beach – Closed until further notice.
⚠️ Encounter Bay to Hayborough – Continue to be closely monitored (no closures currently expected).

The EPA continues to monitor the situation, and beaches will reopen once conditions are safe.

Further updates will be provided as advice is received from official sources.
