Grey-headed Flying Foxes have set up camp right here in Victor Harbor!

These bats are a threatened species, listed as vulnerable both locally and nationally.

They have an established permanent camp at Botanic Park in Adelaide, but sometimes create smaller and more seasonal camps in Greater Adelaide and the Mount Lofty Ranges.

Grey-headed Flying Foxes play a vital role in creating healthy ecosystems. They are important pollinators and seed dispersers, helping native plants and trees regenerate naturally.

If you are lucky enough to spot the species, please never touch or handle any bat. Although it's rare, they can be carriers of disease.

Contact Fauna Rescue (8486 1139) or Bat Rescue SA (0475 132 093) if you see a bat in distress.

Did you know?

  • On hot days, flying foxes may drink from rivers. Don't worry if you see one in water - they can swim!
  • Young flying foxes are prone to misadventure and mortality rates are high during the first two years.
  • Flying foxes are nocturnal, so they forage for food at night usually within 20 kilometres of their camp. They leave the camp at around dusk each evening and return before dawn.
