Give the Gift of Reading this Christmas

Published 3rd November 2025
This festive season, the Victor Harbor Library will once again be participating in the ‘Give the Gift of Reading’ program.

‘Give the Gift of Reading’ is a program that encourages our local community to donate a new children’s book to a local family in need.

All books donated to the Victor Harbor Library are distributed across the Fleurieu Peninsula and southern Adelaide to less-fortunate children, just in time for Christmas.

‘Give the Gift of Reading’ highlights the importance of literacy in lifelong learning. Reading to a child from an early age has been proven to assist children in literacy development and is a wonderful time for children and caregivers to bond.

Last year the Victor Harbor community generously donated 359 books to families in need!

Grandcarers SA has played a vital role in this annual program since 2017, partnering with the Victor Harbor Library and ensuring all donations reach families in time for Christmas. Grandcarers SA is a voluntary not-for-profit organisation formed over 17 years ago as a result of the need for community support and advocacy for grandparents and other kinship carers who could be struggling with the emotional, financial and legal complexities of caring for their grandchildren.

The Victor Harbor Library will be collecting children’s books for children aged between 0-18 years from Monday, 10 November 2025 until 2pm on Saturday, 6 December 2025. This allows time for the hard-working team at Grandcarers SA to distribute the donations to families in need.

Book donations must be newly purchased. They do not need to be gift wrapped.

‘Give the Gift of Reading’ was initiated by Playford Library Services in 2012 and has won various community and local government awards.
