Community Invited to Help Build a Dementia Positive Victor Harbor

Residents of Victor Harbor and surrounding communities are invited to attend a free and inspiring community event this September as part of Dementia Action Week.

The Dementia Awareness Forum: Stronger Together – Let's Talk Dementia and Brain Health on Monday 21 September will bring together community members, carers, health professionals and people living with dementia for an engaging morning of learning, connection and conversation.

Presented by the Dementia Alliance Group and auspiced by the City of Victor Harbor, the forum has been made possible through funding from Country SA PHN.

As Australia's population ages and dementia rates continue to rise, creating informed, supportive and inclusive communities is more important than ever. This forum aims to increase understanding of dementia, highlight the importance of brain health, and empower people with practical information, support and resources.

The event is open to anyone interested in healthy ageing and brain health, including people living with dementia, their families, friends and carers. Attendees will gain practical information about dementia, risk reduction strategies, available support services and referral pathways, as well as exploring how communities can be a part of ensuring people living with dementia remain connected and supported.

Held at Victa Cinema, Victor Harbor, attendees can look forward to:

  • A free screening of the award-winning international documentary Human Forever, which follows a young care innovator as he travels the world exploring new approaches to dementia care and discovering what truly matters in improving the lives of people living with dementia.
  • Presentations from leading experts, including Dr Stephanie Daly from Sensus Cognition and Wendy Hall from Dementia Doulas Australia.
  • The chance to meet with local service providers and community organisations.
  • An interactive panel discussion and audience Q&A session.

City of Victor Harbor Mayor Moira Jenkins said the event is an important step towards building a more dementia friendly community.

"Dementia touches the lives of many people in our community, whether directly or through supporting a family member or friend. Increasing awareness and understanding helps ensure people living with dementia feel valued, included and connected."

"This forum provides an opportunity to learn, ask questions and hear about innovative approaches from around the world, while also connecting with local services and supports. Together, we can create a community where people living with dementia can continue to participate, contribute and live well."

The event is free to attend; however bookings are essential.
