Securing the future of the Encounter Community Centre

Following a request for support, Council is working closely with the Board of Encounter Centre Inc to support the ongoing future of the valued community facility.

On Wednesday, 27 May 2026, the Board advised its members that continuing to operate under its current structure presents a significant financial risk and has called a Special General Meeting to consider a proposal to wind up the incorporated association.

Importantly, this proposal is about ensuring the continuation of the Encounter Community Centre, not its closure.

Council is collaborating with the Board on a pathway that would see the City of Victor Harbor assume management of the Centre, subject to several formal steps and approvals.

City of Victor Harbor Chief Executive Officer, Victoria MacKirdy said the Encounter Community Centre is an important part of the Victor Harbor community.

"For 50 years, the Encounter Community Centre has provided connection, support and a sense of belonging for many in our community. Council's priority is to see that continue," said Ms MacKirdy.

"Council is working with the Board to put arrangements in place that support the Centre's ongoing operation into the future. It's important to emphasise that the next steps are currently in the hands of the Encounter Centre Incorporated Board and membership, with formal decisions expected at the upcoming Special General Meeting."

"The Council has made it clear that it is willing to step in and assume management of the Centre to ensure it continues to serve Victor Harbor well into the future."

Further updates will be available following the outcome of the Special General Meeting and as transition arrangements progress.
