Continuing Our Commitment To Inclusion
Over recent years, significant progress has been made to make Victor Harbor a more accessible and inclusive place to live, work and visit. Guided by Council’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan, a wide range of initiatives have been delivered to remove barriers, improve accessibility and embed inclusive practice across both Council operations and the wider community.
Key achievements to date include:
- Development of an award-winning local government toolkit for supporting a Council Member who is blind
- Accessibility and inclusion upgrades, including installation of a lift, undertaken at the Visitor Centre
- The introduction of an accessibility widget to Council's main website
- New accessible beach matting installed near the Muwerang-Kent Reserve Boat Ramp
- Training rolled out for Council staff on human guiding, universal design, accessible event management and accessible communications
To build upon what has already been achieved, the City of Victor Harbor has recently updated its Disability Access and Inclusion Plan. Adopted at the April Ordinary Council Meeting, the refreshed Plan will guide Council’s work over the next four years, ensuring that progress in this space continues.
The Disability Access and Plan 2026-2030 outlines how Council will support access, inclusion and equity for people living with disability across the region. It is structured around five key domains:
- Inclusive environments and communities
- Education and employment
- Personal and community support
- Health and wellbeing
- Safety, rights and justice
The updated Plan has been shaped through collaboration and lived experience, with valuable insight provided by Council’s Disability Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee. Community members were also involved in its development, sharing feedback and participating in focus groups held during February and March 2026.
Aligned with the South Australia Disability Inclusion Act 2018 and the State Disability Inclusion Plan 2025–2029, the Plan ensures that Council’s local actions contribute to broader statewide goals for inclusion.
Importantly, it reinforces Council’s long‑term commitment to accessibility and inclusion - recognising what has been achieved so far, while setting a clear direction for continued improvement into the future.
