Mayor Responds to Granite Island Article

The following is a letter from City of Victor Harbor Mayor Graham Philp in response to an article published in the Advertiser on 23 January 2017:
Rex Jory may well have observed that Granite Island is in a state of limbo but his vision of housing development and fun park is not the answer (Advertiser, 23 January 2017).
The Island has always been low key in terms of development with its striking natural beauty being its attraction. Yes, the chairlift was removed may years ago and the kiosk/restaurant has been closed for a couple of years. But there are some exciting signs of good things to come which will keep visitors coming back.
The dive with the tuna experience has finally been granted approval and will be on site and operational in the not too distant future. That facility will require and will be enhanced by other services proposed on the Island.
Since the closure of the kiosk, the Council has facilitated pop-up catering and attractions during busy periods to ensure the Island continues to have something to offer visitors.
Penguin tours over the summer holiday period have been operating and are well supported. Positive signs for our penguin population have been evident with tour groups sighting around 10 penguins each tour. Various parties have been focussing on the penguin aspect in an endeavour to ensure a sustainable future.
Investigations are continuing regarding a sculptures focus for the Island. The Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources has invested in stairs, boardwalks and improvements to the definition and drainage of walking trails which must be an improvement on the goat tracks Mr Jory may have experienced 30 or so years ago. And the leisurely trip across the causeway on the horse drawn tram is still on offer and continues to be popular as part of the Granite Island experience. Perhaps a spot of fishing from the causeway or the Island jetty may also excite the Island visitor.
At the end of the day Granite Island is a great walk in fresh clean air with many beautiful vistas to observe in our traditional seaside holiday destination. That is what many are attracted to and why visitor numbers to our region and the Island continue to grow.
