Victor Viewpoint - December 2013

City of Victor Harbor - Victor Viewpoint

Christmas message from the Mayor

Mayor PhilpAs 2013 draws to a close and we move into the festive season now is the perfect opportunity to take a moment and reflect on the year that has passed – let’s celebrate our achievements, learn from our challenges and be grateful for living in one of the most beautiful places in the country.

What a year it has been for Victor Harbor! We were named Australia’s tidiest town, hosted a number of successful events that showcased our region and secured funding to progress the Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre. I am looking forward to what is ahead for us in 2014 and hope you are too.

Please take extra care on the roads if you are going away over the Christmas period. If you are staying in Victor Harbor, don’t miss the chance to bring in the New Year with your loved ones at our action-packed festivities on Warland Reserve.

On behalf of the Elected Members, senior management and staff at the City of Victor Harbor, I wish you all a safe and happy festive season, and prosperous 2014.

$7.5 million funding confirmed for Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre

On Tuesday 3 December the Coalition Government announced it will honour the $7.5 million funding offer for the Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre.

This is a great outcome for our communities, and Alexandrina Council and the City of Victor Harbor would like to thank the community for their ongoing support and commitment of this project.

A Request for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for Architectural and Design Services was released on Saturday, 14 December. The EOI will allow the councils to compile a shortlist of appropriately qualified, skilled and experienced companies to go to a full competitive tender in late 2014. Construction of the Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre is expected to commence in 2015.

To keep up to date with this project register to receive the Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre newsletter by sending your name and email address to localgov@victor.sa.gov.au

Santa's cave on Ocean Street

The cave is located in the Phil Hoffmann Travel office (Corner of Ocean and Coral Streets) and has been open daily since Monday, 16 December 2013 from 11am until 1pm.

The last chance to visit Santa and tell him what you would like for Christmas will be this Saturday, 21 December from 11am until 1pm.

There’s lots of giveaways for children and a colouring competition offering the chance to win one of 10 family passes and five double passes to the Victa Cinema.

Hook, Line and Thinker - Fishing Debris Recycling Program

Hook, Line and Thinker programThe Hook, Line and Thinker program aims to reduce the amount of fishing that ends up in our waterways.

Recreation fishers will be able to dispose of fishing line, hooks, sinkers, lures and floats in the bins which will be emptied by volunteers regularly and recycled into a range of plastic materials.

The fishing debris recycling bins have been installed at four locations including Bluff Jetty, Screwpile Jetty, Bluff Boat Ramp and Causeway Boat Ramp.

This program is an initiative of the City of Victor Harbor in partnership with the City of Onkaparinga and the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges NRM Board.

Going digital - new video conferencing facilities for Council

The City of Victor Harbor has secured over $400,000 in grant funding to introduce new video conferencing facilities that will take Council’s service delivery to the next level.

The new high-definition video conferencing facilities will enable the community to initiate video calls with council staff over the internet, and easily share files pictures and videos.

The funding is being delivered through the Australian Government’s Digital Local Government Program that aims to bring about significant improvements in the quality, availability and speed of local government services.

The grant enables Council to capitalise of the opportunities provided through the National Broadband Network and implement new technologies to provide another way for the community to engage with their council.

The new system is expected to be up and running in late 2014.
