Work starts on Soldiers' Memorial Gardens upgrade

Soldiers' Memorial Gardens Upgrade

The City of Victor Harbor has commenced work on the upgrade of Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens.

The upgrade aims to revitalise this area of heritage significance and includes new paving, garden beds, lighting, irrigation and seating. The landscape upgrade is expected to cost around $350,000 and is due to be complete by the end of November, weather permitting.

The historic gardens were initially established in 1917 as a small memorial and were expanded in 1918. The gardens are State heritage listed and serve as a memorial to those from Victor Harbor who served in the First World War.

“Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens is a site of significant heritage value, and the revitalisation of this site is an opportunity to pay tribute to those who bravely served their country at war,” said City of Victor Harbor Mayor Graham Philp.

“Council has been working closely with both the State Heritage Unit and the Victor Harbor RSL
Sub-Branch to deliver this project, and I particularly thank the RSL for their valuable assistance and involvement.”

President of the Victor Harbor RSL Sub-Branch, Dave Miller, said he was thrilled civil works have started at the site.

“I am proud of the way that the Council and the RSL have worked cooperatively to get this upgrade underway. So much hard work has gone into planning this upgrade, particularly in the last six months,” said Mr Miller.

Get ready to rock 'n roll this September!

Rock n roll festival

Rock ‘n rollers from all over the country are dusting off their blue suede shoes in readiness for the City of Victor Harbor’s annual Rock ‘N Roll Festival which will be held on 19 and 20 September.

The event, now in its eighth year, has firmly established itself on the nation’s rock ‘n roll lovers’ and classic car enthusiasts’ annual calendar. The 2015 program does not disappoint and will feature 21 rock ‘n roll and rockabilly bands, including popular Melbourne band “Itchy Fingers”.

The festival will see brightly dressed rock ‘n roll dancers taking to the streets of Victor Harbor to dance the weekend away while musicians perform from three separate stages in the mainstreet and foreshore precincts. A mixture of hot rods, classic and rock ‘n roll related cars, stimulating memories of a wonderful bygone musical era, will be on display along the streets and reserves of Victor Harbor.

There will be eight independent events organised right across town by various local businesses on the Friday and Saturday nights. Daytime events are free for the public to attend whilst admission charges may apply for evening functions.
