Celebrating our history

August 2014 marks the 150 year anniversary for the Port Elliot to Victor Harbor Railway Line, the completion of the Victoria Pier (now known as the Causeway) and the Railway Goods Shed which is now occupied by the SA Whale Centre.
Construction of these three major projects was a catalyst for the early growth and development of Victor Harbor. So to mark this significant historical milestone, the City of Victor Harbor has teamed up with SteamRanger Heritage Railways to hold a celebratory community event on Sunday, 3 August 2014.
The day’s formalities include:
-
the laying of a time capsule at the SA Whale Centre at 11.30am
-
a free public afternoon tea and “Telling of the story” ceremony from 2pm at the Tram Barn
-
unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the Victor Harbor Railway Station at 3.30pm
-
children’s activities in the SA Whale Centre
Plus there will be gold coin entry to the SA Whale Centre, Horse Drawn Tram and Encounter Discovery Centre.

A guide to Development Plan Amendments
All councils are required to have a Development Plan to guide development and inform the assessment of development applications.
To keep pace with growth and needs in the community, Development Plans are reviewed every five years to identify development related issues and how they can been addressed by amendments to the Development Plan.
Development Plan Amendments (DPA’s) are complex and must be undertaken in line with the formal process outlined in the Development Act, 1993.
To help explain this process, Council has developed a brief summary outlining the key steps in a Development Plan Amendment.
The summary can be viewed on Council’s website or hard copies are available from the Civic Centre reception.

Heritage plaques installed around town
You may have noticed a number of small blue plaques appearing on various buildings around Victor Harbor recently. These plaques mark locations of heritage significance and are a part of Council’s Heritage Interpretive Plaque project.
Thirty-two plaques have been installed so far and more will be rolled out in the coming financial year. The plaques reveal the story and history behind significant State and local heritage buildings in Victor Harbor.
The City of Victor Harbor extends its thanks to members of the Heritage Advisory Committee, particularly Pat Uppill (also a member of the National Trust), who spent hours collating historical information for this project.
Next time you are out and about in Victor Harbor, look out for the blue plaques and find out about the rich and diverse heritage of our area.
