Recognising Our Volunteers

The City of Victor Harbor hosted a morning tea on Friday, 5 June to recognise the outstanding contribution of its volunteers.
There are more than 460 volunteers who give up a significant number of hours – collectively more than 40,000 each year – to assist with Council services, programs and initiatives. This includes our tourism operations, community service programs, care of reserves and parks, our library and as members of Council’s advisory committees.
The contribution these volunteers make to Council and our community is invaluable, and Elected Members and staff at the City of Victor Harbor extend their sincere thanks to all volunteers for their tireless and selfless work.
Council acknowledges the tireless efforts of all volunteers within our community – thanks for making Victor Harbor a better place to live!
Community Banner Competition

The City of Victor Harbor is inviting schools, community groups, artists and individuals to get creative and participate in a community banner competition to mark the 175th anniversary of Local Government in Australia.
In the first instance, interested groups and individuals should submit a design concept interpreting the theme ‘How our community benefits from local government’. Designs could be inspired by council services like the library or social connections programs, or portray how people benefit from community events, volunteering, economic development or environmental initiatives provided by the Council.
Design concepts should be submitted to Council by Friday, 19 June 2015 outlining your idea for a banner.
Up to five concepts will the be shortlisted, with the winner having the opportunity to produce the banner for display in the streets of Adelaide during October as a part of a State-wide competition initiated by Local Government Association of South Australia. The entrants with the remaining four concepts will have the opportunity to produce the banner for display within the City of Victor Harbor during the same time.
The shortlisted groups who choose to bring their concepts to life will be provided with a blank banner and will receive up to $200 support from Council for art supplies.

Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens Upgrade

The City of Victor Harbor is undertaking an upgrade of Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens to revitalise an area of heritage significance.
Council endorsed plans to upgrade Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens last year, and since endorsing the design has received approval from Council Development Assessment Panel (CDAP) and the State Heritage Unit.
The landscape upgrade is expected to cost around $350,000 and will include new paving, garden beds, lighting, irrigation and seating. Funds have been allocated in Council’s draft 2015/16 budget to undertake the upgrade works in the Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens.
Council is working to complete the upgrade of Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens during the centenary of the ANZAC commemoration between 2014-2018, as a way of paying tribute to those who served and lost their lives at war.
The Victor Harbor RSL sub-branch has played an important role in delivering this project, and Council extends their thanks for the RSL’s valuable assistance and involvement.
Council has also been working closely with the State Heritage Unit to ensure the upgrade reflects the heritage significance of the site at the same time as creating a more user-friendly site and revitalising a popular space enjoyed by locals and visitors.
Members of the community may have noticed works that are concurrently being undertaken on an irrigation system at the site.
