City of Victor Harbor - Victor Viewpoint

Help shape Victor Harbor’s future

Share your thoughts on the draft Community Plan

Council wants to hear your views on its draft Community Plan 2036 and Strategic Directions 2016-2020.

Over the past year, Council has been working with the community to develop a new strategic plan for the City of Victor Harbor. The plan, which looks forward 20 years, will play an important role in influencing how Council will respond to both the challenges and opportunities of the future.

View the draft plan, and tell us if you think our focus is in the right areas to ensure Victor Harbor remains a great place to live, work and play.

As a part of the consultation for the draft Community Plan 2036 and Strategic Directions 2016-2020, you are invited to attend an interactive community workshop on Thursday, 17 November at the Victor Harbor Recreation Centre at 6pm for a 6.30pm start.

This workshop is all about listening to your views, and discussing what you think is needed to make Victor Harbor a better place.

The workshop is child friendly and a light supper will be provided.

Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct the best in SA (again!)

Mainstreet Precinct best in regional SA

Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct has been named South Australia’s best regional Mainstreet. And it’s not the first time the Precinct has taken out this title, winning the same award in 2014.

Presented at the Mainstreet SA Awards, the award recognises the efforts of stakeholders in regional areas and towns to work together to improve their mainstreet for the benefit of the local community and visitors.

At the Awards ceremony, the City of Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct activation program was highly commended. The program, delivered to support the Victor Harbor Mainstreet Precinct, involves the resourcing of a Mainstreet Coordinator, delivery of council run or council supported events, streetscape branding and promotions.

However, it was the collaboration between Mainstreet Precinct Traders, Council and the community during stage one of the recent upgrade that set Victor Harbor apart from other Precincts.

Mayor Graham Philp is proud of the accolade and on behalf of Council extends his congratulations to Mainstreet Traders, Council staff and the community for their role in achieving the award.

Update on Council’s elector representation review

Elector Representation Review

The first round of public consultation relating to the City of Victor Harbor’s elector representation review closed in October and Council would like to thank the 317 people who took the time to provide their feedback.

Council considered the results of the consultation and resolved to go to the second round of public consultation with a proposal to retain the current composition and structure of Council.

The proposal would see the Mayor continue to be elected by the community for a four year term, with nine area Councillors (no wards).

The second round of public consultation will be undertaken in December and January. A mailout of City of Victor Harbor residents and ratepayers will be undertaken and information will also be available on Council’s consultation hub, www.yoursay.victor.sa.gov.au.

We will also keep you updated through future editions of Victor Viewpoint.

Prepare for the fire danger season

Prepare for fire danger season 2016

It is your responsibility to make sure you and your family are prepared for fire danger season.

There are a few precautionary things you can do now to prepare including:

  • Cut down grass and clear away any fallen branches or debris within 20m of your home
  • Clean leaves from gutters, roofs and downpipes regularly
  • Trim low-lying branches (less that 1m above the ground)
  • Move flammable items well away from your home (including mulch and woodpiles)
  • Check that your first aid kit is fully stocked.

It is also important to prepare a bushfire survival plan and make sure all members of your household are aware of it.

Fire danger season starts 1 December 2016 until 30 April 2017.

For more information about preparing for the fire danger season visit www.cfs.sa.gov.au

REMINDER: Council’s block clearing program

Each year Council inspects vacant blocks within the City of Victor Harbor township and some rural areas to identify if block clearing is required as a fire prevention measure. Some property owners may have received formal notice from Council advising them to arrange for the vacant blocks to be cleared. Action must be taken before the required date outlined on the notice, otherwise a fine of $315 will be issued. Additionally, Council will arrange for the block clearing to occur and further charge the property owner a minimum of $170 per standard block. Find out more about the 2016 block clearing program.
