Torrens Lane Upgrade - Works start 2 February

Council will commence civil works on Torrens Lane, Victor Harbor from 2 February 2015.

The upgrade includes new asphalt pavement, new kerb and gutter, traffic signage and minor drainage works. Work is expected to be complete by the end of April, provided there are no unexpected delays.

During the works period, Torrens Lane will be subject to lane closures. Traffic management devices will also be in place to ensure safe passage of traffic and to minimise the impact of the works on nearby landowners.

Council asks that you please observe and obey signage and barricades in and around the works site, and be aware that normal access routes may be altered through the course of the project.

A project display will be available for public viewing in the Council Office, 1 Bay Road Victor Harbor for the duration of the works period.

Help Save Pensioner Concessions on Council Rates

Pensioner Concessions - More than a quarter of the City of Victor Harbor's ratepayers receive a concession on their council ratesIn June 2014 the Federal Government cut funding to the State Government for pensioner and other concessions amounting to $27 million.

The State Government has maintained concessions on Council rates paid under the SA Parliament’s rates and Land Tax Remission Act 1986 ($34 million) this financial year. However it has announced it will stop concessions on rates from 1 July 2015.

We estimate that next year’s rates, for most people currently eligible for a concession, will include a “bill shock” of around 20% without the concession.

Council is opposed to the Federal cut and is also opposing the State Government’s decision to abolish concessions on Council rates.

Help us to help our most vulnerable to retain their concession payments.

To support your Council’s aim to reverse this decision, please contact your local Member of Parliament – go to: www.lga.sa.gov.au/localmp.

New Children’s Area Opened in Library

Encounter Kids Space Opened

The Victor Harbor Public Library officially opened its new Children’s Area – The Encounter Kids Space – on Thursday, 15 January 2015.

The refurbished space is an interactive exciting area based on the iconic ‘Encounter’ event in our local Bay. The overall concept of the new children’s area is to modernise the nautical, tall ship theme and include areas where children can play, read and learn in.

The refurbishments include compact shelving, vibrant and nautically themed furniture, a bookcase converted into a tall ship with a mast, sails, telescope and reading nooks.

In addition to the refurbishments, students from schools around Victor Harbor created mascots for the Children’s Area. Encounter Lutheran Students created Little Nick based on explorer Nicholas Baudin and Victor Harbor R-7 students created Captain Matt and his cat Trim based on explorer Matthew Flinders.

Come into the library, check out the new space and meet the Mascots!
