Cats

Responsible cat ownership

Cats are excellent companion animals, being affectionate, intelligent, clean and easy to handle.

Owning a cat brings with it many responsibilities. Not only will you have to feed and care for the cat, but ensure your cat does not impact your neighbours or wildlife.

The Cat Owner’s Handbook is a great resource that outlines different aspects of cat ownership.

Registering your cat

How to register your cat

To register your cat visit Dogs and Cats Online (DACO).

Please note registration discs are no longer being issued and your cat identified by its microchip number.

Identification

In addition to the requirements for your cat to be micro-chipped the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 requires your cat must, when not confined to your premises, wear a collar around its neck with the last registration disc issued for the cat or a tag legibly setting out the name of owner or person entitled to be in possession of the cat and the address of the owner or other person or the telephone number of the owner or other person.

Microchipping and desexing requirements

The Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 requires Dogs and Cats to be microchipped before 12 weeks of age or at the point of sale. Dogs and Cats born after 30 June 2018 must also be desexed before 6 months of age or within 28 days of ownership. A veterinary surgeon may grant an extension of time to desex a dog or cat or exempt an animal from desexing or microchipping if it poses an undue risk to health or adversely affects the growth, development or wellbeing of the dog or cat.

Microchip details and desexing certification must be recorded on the statewide database, Dogs and Cats Online (DACO).
