2017 Business Survey

Business confidence on the rise in Victor Harbor

The key findings for the second Victor Harbor business survey have been released and the results show local businesses are optimistic about the future.

More than 190 local businesses responded to the survey which was circulated by the City of Victor Harbor and Business Victor Harbor to gain a clearer understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by the business community.

The survey focussed on finding out more about the types of businesses in the council area, past and future performance, their views on the local business environment and the type of support services that would grow and sustain their business. The survey also specifically asked businesses if they felt the new developments including ALDI and Coles/Bunnings would impact their business.

Just over 45% of the survey respondents believed the new developments would have a positive impact on their business while 43% felt there would be no impact.

In terms of trading performance, there was a clear trend that business performance in the last six months was generally better than the same period from the previous year. While growth constraints remained unchanged with rising utility costs, price pressure from customers and taxes and government charges remaining the key challenges for local business.

City of Victor Harbor Deputy Mayor Nicholas Hayles said the results of the business survey provided council with valuable information.

“The survey findings offer an important insight into local business environment. While it is great to see a rise in business confidence with many optimistic about what the future holds, it is clear there is a role for council to provide support services,” said Deputy Mayor Hayles.

“Council’s economic development division has been working closely with Business Victor Harbor to offer a range of seminars and information opportunities that support local businesses including the energy expo held towards the end of 2017 which provided a chance for businesses to learn how they can reduce their energy costs.”

“The survey results will help us in our planning for our 2018/19 activities to ensure we are delivering projects and initiatives that best meet the needs of our business community.”

Business Victor Harbor Chair Nick Gormley was thrilled with the local business community’s response to the survey.
“The significant responses received provides us with clear direction and credible evidence of what Victor Harbor businesses are experiencing and we can tailor support to meet their needs.”

As an added incentive for businesses to complete the survey Business Victor Harbor sponsored an iPad mini to be awarded to a survey participant in a random draw. The winner was local businessman Paul Gee.
