Victor Harbor community urged to tell Council how they want to be represented
The City of Victor Harbor is urging ratepayers and residents to provide feedback on a proposal that would see the Mayor continue to be elected by the community, the existing ‘no wards’ structure retained and number of Councillors remain at nine.
The proposal is a part of the Council’s elector representation review which looks at the representation composition and structure, and considers whether any changes would provide greater benefit to the community.
After considering the results of the first round of consultation in September 2016, the Council felt there was not a strong enough call for change from the community and that status quo should remain. A Representation Review Report has been prepared to explain the rationale behind the proposal.
City of Victor Harbor Mayor Graham Philp stressed how important it is for the community to share their views with Council on the representation review proposal.
“The elector representation review is all about the community and how they want to be represented at a local government level. It is really important we hear from as many people as possible so we can be sure the decision we make will be the best for our community,” said Mayor Philp.
“At the end of the day we are asking for 10 minutes of your time to find out about the proposal, complete a survey and return it to Council.”
There are a number of ways members of the community can find out about the proposal and provide their feedback.
“Some elected members will be at this Saturday’s Farmers’ Market with information, we will also be doing a city wide mailbox drop plus you can go online to www.yoursay.victor.sa.gov.au or visit the Civic Centre and Library to find out more and have your say.”
Public consultation will close at 5pm on Friday, 20 January 2017.
All councils are required to review their elector representation periodically. This generally occurs every eight years, with the City of Victor Harbor commencing its current review in May 2016.
