Update – Causeway Repairs and Horse Tram Operation
The City of Victor Harbor has been advised that the SA Government will commence temporary remedial work on the Causeway next week with the aim of resuming operation of the Horse Drawn Tram as soon as possible.
Repairs are expected to take up to eight weeks to complete (weather permitting). The 2.5 tonne load limit will remain in place as the works are undertaken, and there may be some short-term vehicle and pedestrian access restrictions to ensure public safety as the works are undertaken.
A decision relating to the re-commencement of tram services will be made following further testing and investigations which will be undertaken as a part of the remedial works.
There is no doubt that the future of the Causeway to Granite Island and the operation of the iconic Horse Drawn Tram is highly important to the City of Victor Harbor and South Australia. We are pleased that all levels of government have acknowledged that a long term solution for safe access to Granite Island is needed.
The City of Victor Harbor has clearly indicated that its preference is to see a new structure developed, and we will continue to strongly advocate for this on behalf of our community.
We will provide further updates on the Causeway repairs and operation of the Horse Drawn Tram as we can.
