Ocean Street comes to life at Street Party
Ocean Street was buzzing with activity last Friday night as the community came together to celebrate the completion of Stage 1 of the Victor Harbor Mainstreet Precinct upgrade and launch of the Council’s digital art project.
Hundreds of locals and visitors converged on Ocean Street, enjoying the party atmosphere that set the tone for an action packed weekend in Victor Harbor. Entertainment, food and market stalls stretched the length of Ocean Street, with the result of Stage 1 works proudly showcased in the heart of the Precinct.
It was when the sun set that an air of excitement swept over the Precinct and the façade of the Victa Cinema became the canvas for Council’s innovative digital art project. As a part of Stage 1 of the Victor Harbor Mainstreet Precinct Upgrade a permanent projector was installed to project digital art on to the art deco cinema. It is the first permanent infrastructure of its type to be installed in regional South Australia.
An animation that celebrates our local connection with whales was created by South Australian based company and national leader in outdoor light installations, Illuminart. The animation, titled the Cosmic Whale Song, will play every night from dusk until midnight bringing colour, movement and vibrancy into the Precinct.
City of Victor Harbor Mayor Graham Philp said the community street party was the perfect way to celebrate the beginning of the Mainstreet Precinct’s transformation.
“It was fitting to mark this significant milestone with a Street Party that centred on bringing our community together to enjoy the amazing, revitalised public space,” said Mayor Philp.
“Stage 1 of the upgrade has certainly transformed the heart of our Mainstreet Precinct, and to see the concept image become a reality is something we are really proud of.”
“The Street Party has shown our community the potential of our Mainstreet Precinct, and I am really excited to see where we can go from here.”
When officially opening Stage 1 of the upgrade, Mayor Philp recognised the tireless work of the project team, and also acknowledged the patience, persistence and comradery that was demonstrated by the Mainstreet Traders during the works period.
“Those who haven’t had a chance to see the result of the upgrade, I encourage you to head into the Mainstreet Precinct and see the result for yourself. And if you are there after dark, the Cosmic Whale Song animation is sure to put a smile on your face,” said Mayor Philp.
