Council to look at more options for arts centre
At its meeting on Monday, 23 April the City of Victor Harbor voted to explore more options for an arts and culture centre in the council area.
After considering the results of the consultation on the Coral Street Arts and Culture Centre concept plan, the council felt it was their duty to explore other options before making any further commitment to the project.
The Coral Street Arts and Culture Centre project is a proposal to redevelop the State heritage listed Town Hall and Old Library buildings in Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct.
Earlier this year the community was asked to put forward their thoughts on the proposal, and provide ideas about what Victor Harbor needs for, and in, an arts and culture centre.
The response to the consultation exercise was overwhelming with 1,239 respondents sharing their views – the biggest response for an individual consultation conducted by the City of Victor Harbor.
The results of the consultation showed there was an appetite from the community for council to pursue the development of an arts and culture centre in Victor Harbor.
“It is clear there is a strong desire from our community to see an arts and culture centre built in Victor Harbor,” said City of Victor Harbor Mayor Philp.
“The recent consultation on the concept plan for the Coral Street facility saw 80% of respondents indicate they want to see an arts and culture centre in Victor Harbor, and the council is committed to seeing this happen.”
“However, we can’t progress the Coral Street project without exploring other locations for such a facility. We need to be sure we are making the best decision for our community.”
The council will now scope alternate options for consideration and further investigation.
