Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct the best in regional SA

Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct has been named South Australia’s best regional Mainstreet. And it’s not the first time the Precinct has taken out this title, winning the same award in 2014.

Presented at the Mainstreet SA Awards held in Adelaide on Friday night, the award recognises the efforts of stakeholders in regional areas and towns to work together to improve their mainstreet for the benefit of the local community and visitors.

At the Awards ceremony, the City of Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct activation program was commended. The program, delivered to support the Victor Harbor Mainstreet Precinct, involves the resourcing of a Mainstreet Coordinator, delivery of council run or council supported events, streetscape branding and promotions.

However, it was the collaboration between Mainstreet Precinct Traders, Council and the community during stage one of the recent upgrade that set Victor Harbor apart from other Precincts.

The first stage of the Victor Harbor Mainstreet Precinct upgrade was completed this year. And during the works the heart of the Precinct became a construction site for a four month period from May to August.

City of Victor Harbor Mayor Graham Philp said that while the construction period was not an easy time, he was proud of the can-do attitude that many traders demonstrated.

“The way that Mainstreet Precinct Traders banded together to come up with creative initiatives to get people into the Precinct during the works period was fantastic, and the Mainstreet SA award further highlights how special this is,” said Mayor Philp.

“The comradery displayed by the traders, coupled with support from Council, resulted in a number of great initiatives being delivered including a weekly raffle and the ‘I’m In’ discount booklet that was delivered to around 6,500 households with the council area.”

“These initiatives were all about bringing local people back into the Mainstreet Precinct, and they culminated with the Community Street Party at the end of the Stage 1 works which saw thousands of locals come into the Precinct to celebrate its transformation.”

“I congratulate Mainstreet Traders and Council staff for their hard work and dedication that has resulted in this fitting accolade.”

“Our community is also a significant part of this success through their continued support of the Precinct.”

The Mainstreet SA Awards recognise the great work done in mainstreets across the State, and highlight the importance of mainstreets and their role in the local community.
