Renaming of Reserve - Muwerang/Kent Reserve

The City of Victor Harbor at its meeting held on 27 November 2023 resolved in accordance with Council’s Resolution OC4062023, and pursuant to section 219(4) of the Local Government Act 1999, that Kent Reserve be renamed to Muwerang/Kent Reserve.

Background

Kent Reserve has a long history dating back to first nation’s people and white settlers.  Kent Reserve was one of the last camping grounds of the Ramindjeri.

Ramindjeri Heritage Association wrote to Council seeking to have Kent Reserve changed back to its original name of Muwerang, meaning “Mouth of the River”. Dual signage for Muwerang-Kent was installed at Kent Reserve BBQ shelter in 2009-10, however no formal reserve name change occurred at this time.

The request was referred to the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Corporation for its support of the name change.  The Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Corporation provided its support.
