Bruce Henderson was a member of the Victor Harbor community his whole life and tragically passed away in May 2023.

Bruce grew up on a farm in Inman Valley.  He attended Victor Harbor High School and was an active member of the Victor Harbor Golf Club from childhood.  Bruce was much loved by the golf community and the club hosted a tribute match in his honour.  Bruce was also a respected tennis player.

During Bruce’s later high school years and while he was studying Civil Engineering at the University of Adelaide, Bruce was part of the park attendant team at Greenhills Adventure Park.  He oversaw various activities across the site during peak seasons and assisted in park maintenance in the off season.  One former team colleague recalled Bruce spending a lot of his time greeting visitors in the ticket sales window.

Greenhills Adventure Park reappeared in Bruce’s professional life in 2015 when plans were submitted to Council for the residential development of the park.  In his role as Manager Infrastructure at the City of Victor Harbor, Bruce interfaced with the developer and their engineers in administering engineering approval of the first stage.

Bruce cherished his time working at the City of Victor Harbor and met his wife Carrie while he worked in the Department of Environment and Infrastructure.  Over his career spanning 21 years, Bruce made a substantial contribution to local government. While his contribution to the City of Victor Harbor across 10 years has been well documented, he made substantial contributions to local government elsewhere, making a difference to the communities wherever he worked.  He worked closely with metropolitan and regional councils across South Australia on projects as diverse as the Renmark Aquatic Centre Upgrade, the Mount Barker Regional Sports Hub Trail, the Tumby Bay Flood Mitigation Scheme, the Churchill Road Streetscape Upgrade and Gawler’s Pioneer Park Heritage Wall.

One of his most notable projects was the delivery of the Stage 1 Mainstreet Upgrade with the challenges of installing the iconic palm trees.

Bruce had a great sense of community, was always one to help out a mate and made many contributions through his work to Local Government all across South Australia, particularly other rural Councils such as Renmark Paringa and Murray Bridge.
