Driving The Future

Keen to make a difference to the lives of young people?

As a volunteer for our Driving The Future program, you will supervise young people as they work towards obtaining their provisional driver’s licence.

You’ll supervise driving sessions of up to 2 hours to support young people in gaining their 75 hours of driving experience. You’re not expected to be a professional driving instructor – you’re simply there to provide supervision and support.

To get the most out of the role, you’ll need to:

  • Be patient and empathetic
  • Remain cool, calm and collected in the passenger seat
  • Offer constructive feedback and encouragement

There are some requirements that need to be met, including a Working with Children Check, but we’ll help you get the relevant checks and training required.

The City of Victor Harbor is ‘taking the wheel’ and supporting young people to obtain their provisional driver’s licence.

We all know that being able to drive provides young people with independence, but it can also support their transition from education to employment and ensure they are active members of their community.

A lack of transport options in the Fleurieu Peninsula means young people without a licence are not connected to essential services and programs that support their health, wellbeing and development.

Before young people can obtain their provisional driver’s licence, they must accumulate 75 hours of driving experience.

The goal of Driving The Future is to support young people in obtaining their provisional driver’s licence so they can access education and employment, and not be transport disadvantaged.

The program is particularly targeted to young people between the ages of 16 - 25 who are facing multiple barriers in obtaining their driver’s licence.

With an aim to launch the program in 2024, Council is currently seeking volunteers.

This initiative is being delivered by the City of Victor Harbor’s Youth Development Program with support from Bendigo Bank, Victor Harbor Rotary Club, the Kiwanis Group and other local organisations.
