Recycling bottles and tyres for our roads

Published 28th July 2023
What do glass bottles and tyres have in common? Thousands of them have been used to reseal roads in the City of Victor Harbor!
Last month, sections of Armstrong Road and Seaview Road were resealed with a type of asphalt that incorporates recycled materials.

It means the roads now contain:

  • 368,760 glass bottles (or 80,340 kilograms)
  • 1,044 tyres (or 7,110 kilograms)
Even more materials were recycled as reseal works continued on Agnes Gillespie/ Sinclair Street, Waterport Road and Range Road this week.

These works have been undertaken as part of Council's annual resealing program which aims to maintain and improve our local road network. When going through procurement processes, Council consciously selects contractors with sustainability in mind.

By contributing to the circular economy, we are reducing the amount of virgin materials required to build our roads. This provides sustainable outcomes by repurposing everyday products that are otherwise destined for landfill.
