Do you have an Advance Care Directive (ACD)?

Published 20th March 2023
If you became unable to make decisions, how would you want your health care, living arrangements and other personal matters dealt with?

This week (20 - 26 March 2023) is National Advance Care Planning Week, which is is a prompt for everyone, regardless of age or health status, to make their future health care preferences known.

An ACD enables you to make some decisions about your future if you were to become seriously ill and unable to communicate your preferences. This could include if:

  • you experience a sudden accident or serious mental health episode
  • you have dementia or similar condition
  • you experience a sudden serious stroke
  • you are unconscious or in a coma.

An ACD can give you peace of mind to know that your wishes are known and will be respected, if others need to make decisions for you. It empowers you to make clear legal arrangements for your future health care, end of life, preferred living arrangements and other personal matters.

The City of Victor Harbor, Alexandrina Council and District Council of Yankalilla are currently working together with the Fleurieu ACD Reference Group to develop a community service that will equip people with the information they need to complete their own ACD. Learn more about this project.
