Car Parking
The City of Victor Harbor provides more than 2,000 car parking spaces at various locations within the council area.
Council acknowledges that as Victor Harbor grows parking hours need to be reviewed to ensure the appropriate turnover of vehicles to balance the needs of residents, businesses and visitors.
Licence Plate Recognition Technology Trial
A Traffic Movement and Car Parking Study undertaken in 2017 identified that parking spaces within the town centre were rarely at full capacity, and could be better managed to balance the needs of visitors and businesses.
To help us better manage the use of these parking spaces, Council is trialling the use of Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) technology. The technology essentially replaces the traditional act of a parking inspector physically chalking a tyre to monitor time parking limits with a more efficient electronic method.
The trial will commence from mid-December 2018 within Victor Harbor’s Town Centre, and from January 2019 will include the parking spaces in the Victor Central Shopping Complex.
LPR uses photo recognition to record and cross reference licence plate numbers. This is done using an LPR camera which is mounted on a patrol car and connected to a computer within the vehicle. The technology alerts parking officers when a vehicle has remained in the parking space for longer than the permitted time.
Data gathered through the trial will assist council to manage parking spaces in a more efficient, cost effective and consistent manner.
