Huge increases to recycling over the summer period

The results from the Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority are in... and Victor Harbor has reduced waste to landfill by 23% compared to the previous year!

Over the 2022/23 peak summer season, the Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority made some changes to kerbside waste collection. Yellow recycling bins and green food organics and garden organics (FOGO) bins were collected weekly from 19 December 2022 to 27 January 2023.

The results from the change have been outstanding, with significant increases to recycling and tonnes more waste injected into the circular economy. Our waste diversion rate improved from 56% to 70%.

Some statistics for the City of Victor Harbor compared to the 2021/22 summer season:

  • Waste to landfill was reduced by 23%
  • FOGO increased by 60%
  • Recycling increased by 16%
  • 327 tonnes of general waste was sent to landfill (a decrease of 95 tonnes)
  • 498 tonnes of FOGO was collected (an increase of 187 tonnes)
  • 260 tonnes of recycling was collected (an increase of 35 tonnes)

The figures show our community adapted well to the summer collection change, and residents embraced the opportunity to recycle more. Thank you, Victor Harbor!

Results in our neighbouring councils (District Council of Yankalilla, Alexandrina Council and Kangaroo Island Council) were similarly positive, with general waste reduced by 20% across the region compared to last year.

The Fleurieu Peninsula continues to lead the way when it comes to waste management, being the first councils in South Australia to provide weekly collection of recycling and FOGO over the summer period.

While feedback from residents was mostly positive, some households noted confusion around the collection schedule change, and others expressed a desire for FOGO collection at rural properties. We will continue to analyse our waste management systems and consider how we can improve this service for the community.
