Yandra Terrace Stormwater Outlet Replacement
Repairing and future-proofing our stormwater infrastructure.
Storm events in 2022 significantly damaged the Yandra Terrace stormwater outlet in Hayborough. The area surrounding the outlet faced substantial erosion, culminating in the collapse of a retaining wall and the undermining of the stormwater outlet pipe.
While the City of Victor Harbor undertook emergency works to backfill erosion and install temporary safeguards following storms, a more permanent solution was required to future-proof the stormwater infrastructure.

What did this project involve?
This project aimed to repair and improve the Yandra Terrace stormwater outlet, providing a sustainable infrastructure solution that can better withstand increasingly severe storms along our coastline.
Works involved with this project included:
- Removal of existing pipe and pit structures
- Installation of new stormwater outlet
- Installation of new sandbag coastal protection wall
- Revegetation of reinstated sand dunes area
- Removal and reinstatement of railway.
Works to replace the stormwater outlet were complex due to the site being positioned within a vulnerable dune system, beneath the SteamRanger railway and at a high energy point of the coast.
In consultation with Council, the contractor engaged to undertake this project identified and protected areas of dune vegetation that should not be disturbed, and an independent geotechnical consultant provided advice throughout the project.
The City of Victor Harbor worked closely with SteamRanger on this project.

Timeline
Works to prepare the site for construction, including upgrading access tracks for construction vehicles and flagging off vegetation areas, took place in early 2023. Major construction works occured throughout September and early October 2023.
The SteamRanger railway was temporarily closed in late September to facilitate works, but has since been re-opened.
Ongoing work is still being undertaken to ensure revegetation and rehabilitation of the sand dunes area.
Funding
The Yandra Terrace stormwater outlet replacement was supported by grant funding from the Stormwater Management Authority.
