George T Fisher Playground - Stage 2
George T Fisher Playground Redevelopment
George T Fisher Playground, located on the Foreshore adjacent Flinders Parade, is Victor Harbor's premier regional playground, attracting children and families for generations.
The redevelopment of the playground has been long overdue (last upgraded in 2002), with the upgrade split over two financial years. Stage 1 was completed in 2018/19 with funding received from the Open Space Grants Program. The completion of Stage 1 has been met with enormous community support and positive feedback.
Stage 2 will complete the project to rejuvenate this playspace including a mounded play area with slides and climbers, and a pathway connection through to the foreshore, defining the edge of the Soldiers Memorial Gardens.
This project was identified in Council's Open Space Asset Management Plan and Recreation and Open Space Strategy. Council recognises the significance of this project from a recreation, tourism and cultural heritage perspective. The project incorporates the principles of Natureplay and Healthy Spaces and Places to develop a versatile and attractive inclusive play space within a family friendly park.
Stage 2 - construction commenced February 2021
The major elements for Stage 2 are a 1.5 metre high mound with slides and climbing wall which received strong support during the public consultation phase in 2018.
A pathway will connect Flinders Parade to the Foreshore Promenade, providing greater connectivity from Railway Terrace and defining the boundary between the play space and the Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens.
The Design for Stage 2 also includes several interactive sensory play items and additional seating and tables in the younger children play space on the paved area adjacent the train.
The detailed design is now to be finalised in preparation for construction in 2020/21.
Council has secured $100,000 through the SA Government’s Open Space Grant Program to assist with the $200,000 cost of construction.
Stage 1 - Completed June 2019
The City of Victor Harbor commenced construction of Stage 1 of the new George T Fisher Playground in March 2019 and work was completed in June 2019.
The redevelopment followed extensive community consultation and was designed to ensure the playground remains one of the most popular family destinations in the region.
The design of the new nature playground has been a hit with all ability and inclusive play opportunities, and quirky play areas including an island with bridge access, fisherman’s shack and railway inspired elements.
Council secured $220,000 through the SA Government’s Planning and Development Fund Open Space Grant Program to assist with the cost of construction for the first stage.
