Encounter Coast Discovery Centre

Encounter Coast Discovery Centre

Step back in time through the doors of the Encounter Coast Discovery Centre and be amazed at this audio visual interpretation of the magic of Dreamtime, struggles of early settlers, local whaling heritage and to current times. The Encounter Coast Discovery Centre officially opened on Boxing Day December 26, 1997. Jointly funded by the State & Federal Governments and National Trust Victor Harbor Branch, the Centre was designed by John Perkins. Collaborating with the team of National Trust volunteers, the design was developed so that all historic information could be effectively displayed in an appealing manner.

Run by the National Trust of Victor Harbor, this adventure tour will be a modern day walk through history finishing up in aGeorgian styled Old Customs & Station-Masters House. Built in 1866, the home is set up with original artifacts of the same era that will allow you to imagine the lives of the many occupiers up until 1986. Furthermore, you'll find out how Australia's first railway came to link Goolwa and Port Elliot for trading purposes into old Port Victor. A detailed photograph collection is also on display that highlights local historic milestones.

Heritage Walking Trail Old Port Victor

Released in early July 2004, a new brochure entitled 'Heritage Walking Trail - Old Port Victor' has been developed cooperatively between the National Trust of Victor Harbor and the City of Victor Harbor council.

The brochure details 21 historical points of interest and is designed as a self-guided walking tour in and around the Victor Harbor CBD. The brochure relives some of Victor Harbor's treasured landmarks such as the Anchorage (formerly known as 'Warringa'), the Railway Gates (the only hand operated gates remaining in South Australia) and the Old Customs & Stationmasters House where the tour commences.

The tour is expected to take approximately 2 hours but is dependent on walking speed and time spent at each point of interest.

The Old Port Victor Heritage Walking Trail can be collected from either:

  • The City of Victor Harbor - 1 Bay Road, Victor Harbor (Mon - Fri, 9am - 5pm)
  • The Encounter Coast Discovery Centre - 2 Flinders Parade, Victor Harbor (7 days, 1pm - 4pm)
  • Victor Harbor Visitor Information Centre - The Esplanade, Victor Harbor (7days, 9am - 5pm)
