Victor Harbor is ‘best dressed’

Victor Harbor was named the daily winner for the Santos Best Dressed Town competition for Thursday’s Stage 3 of the Santos Tour Down Under.

The town was full of colour as the internationally acclaimed cycling race rolled into town. Kangaroos on bikes lined key roundabouts along the race route, while trees around Victor Harbor were decorated with ochre and blue bows.

The decorations were put up by volunteers, local businesses and Council staff.

City of Victor Harbor Mayor Graham Philp said Victor Harbor was deserving of the ‘Best Dressed Town’ title.

“Victor Harbor certainly put its best foot forward for this year’s Santos Tour Down Under. I received lots of great feedback that the town looked bright and welcoming,” said Mayor Philp.

“I would particularly like to thank the Rotary Club of Encounter Bay for putting out the Kangaroos at the roundabouts, Southern Relay for Life for putting up the bows along the race route, Victor Harbor Mainstreet Precinct Committee for decorating the Main Street and the Encounter Centre, Encounter Lutheran College, Spinners and Weavers, CWA Victor Harbor, Victor Harbor Cycle and Skate, and the Victor Harbor City Band for creating their own decorations around town.”

“Congratulations and thank you to all of these groups and everyone else who put up decorations. Your efforts have been rewarded with this sought after title.”

Despite the heat and resulting changes to the race route in Victor Harbor, a number of dedicated spectators took to the streets to cheer on the riders.

“There is no doubt that the heat impacted the number of spectators along the race route, however we were really pleased with the turnout at Warland Reserve.”

“Our ‘Encounter It All’ Tourism Village set up on Warland Reserve was well received by both locals and visitors who took the chance to sample wines and tasty delights from around the Fleurieu region.”

The Tourism Village also included stalls from the Horse Tram, SA Whale Centre, Waitpinga Quad Bike Adventures, Oceanic Victor, Big Duck Boat Tours, Ocean Living Surf School and the Fleurieu Aquatic Centre.

The Santos Tour Down Under offers significant tourism and economic benefits to Victor Harbor and the region, and the City of Victor Harbor was thrilled to be involved in yet another successful stage finish.

“The television coverage of the event certainly showed Victor Harbor at its best. Warland Reserve was bustling with activity and vibrancy, and our coastline and landscapes were stunning as always,” said Mayor Philp.

“The world-wide exposure that Victor Harbor receives by hosting a finish of the event is priceless.”
