Victor Harbor wins at the National Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beaches Awards

National KAB Clean Beaches AwardVictor Harbor has received national recognition for the range of sustainability initiatives in place to protect and preserve its coastal environment.

At the National Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beaches Awards held in Victoria last week, the City of Victor Harbor won the Heritage and Culture category which celebrates and acknowledges the hard work of the community and Council to ensure the rich fabric of Victor Harbor’s long history is immediately visible when arriving on the foreshore.

Council was also presented with a special commendation for its overall commitment to delivering initiatives in partnership with the community that contribute to Victor Harbor being one of the country’s most sustainable beachside communities.

While special commendations are not normally presented, Australian Clean Beaches judge Averil Bones felt strongly about recognising the significant work of the Council, resource managers and volunteers.

“Victor Harbor’s abundant natural beauty is just the start of what this great place has to offer,” said Ms Bones.

“Victor Harbor’s facilities are second to none. Walking trail signage, visitor and discovery centres, and innovative tourism activities provide a wide range of opportunities for people of all abilities and backgrounds to enjoy Victor Harbor’s coast.”

The creative, cost effective solutions that Council has found to manage foreshore erosion were particularly noted along with community effort to protect nesting shorebirds, improvements to the mainstreet and foreshore precincts, revegetation programs and the significant work of Victor Harbor Scouts who manage 12 can and bottle bins in the CBD.

City of Victor Harbor Mayor Graham Philp is proud of the national acknowledgement and said it is a testament to the strong relationship between Council and the community.

“Victor Harbor’s coastal environment is one of our most important assets, and the commitment to preserve and protect it is a high priority for both Council and the community. This commitment is highlighted and rewarded through the accolades we have received from our peers in this National Awards program,” said Mayor Philp.

“The tireless work and dedication of volunteers, community groups and Council staff who play a leading role in many of the projects and initiatives is extraordinary, and these accolades are well deserved.”
