Elector Representation Review Options Paper Out for Public Consultation

The City of Victor Harbor is reviewing elector representation, and is seeking community feedback on a number of options relating to electoral composition and the possible division of the Council area into wards.

Councils are required to conduct a review of their representation periodically as determined by the Minister for Local Government. The reviews generally occur every eight years, with the City of Victor Harbor’s last review completed in 2009.

The current review commenced in May 2016 and sets to review the composition of the Council, specifically in relation to the:

  • Method by which a Mayor is elected (whether it is a Mayor elected by the community or Chairperson selected by Councillors);
  • Number of Councillors (currently there are nine);
  • Structure for the election of Councillors (whether the council area should be divided into wards or remain as one electorate).

After an Elected Member Workshop and Public Information Session that discussed the review process in early July, a Representation Options Paper was prepared and has today been released for public consultation.

The Options Paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of a number of options for representation in the Council area. It looks at whether the number of Councillors should be reduced, and whether or not a ward structure should be introduced.

“Essentially, the review aims to determine whether a change to Council’s electoral composition and/or ward structure would benefit our community,” said City of Victor Harbor Mayor Graham Philp.

“The community is at the centre of this review, and I really encourage people to take the time to look at the potential alternatives outlined within the Representation Review Options Paper and provide Council with their feedback.”

Written submissions should be addressed to the City of Victor Harbor’s Chief Executive Officer and returned by close of business on Friday, 30 September 2016.
