Planning for Victor Harbor’s Future Housing Needs

The City of Victor Harbor is currently undertaking a review of housing needs within the council area and is calling on the community to share their thoughts.

We are one of the fastest growing council areas in the State. Currently sitting at 14,600, the population is expected to reach around 21,000 by 2036. To support this growth, the Council is looking at strategies to ensure there is sufficient land available to cater for Victor Harbor’s population over the next 20 years.

Council is now asking the community to share their feedback on the proposed strategies that aim to achieve a sustainable approach to housing development in Victor Harbor.

“Our council area is divided into a number of residential zones, or policy areas, all of which have a specific set of rules for housing development. This sets parameters around housing density, aims to protect the town’s character and, preserve its landscape amenity,” said City of Victor Harbor Mayor Graham Philp.

“In this discussion with the community, we want to know their thoughts on proposed changes to density within some of these policy areas, as well as their thoughts on urban sprawl and expanding Victor Harbor’s residential boundaries.”

“In essence what we are trying to achieve is a sustainable mix of infill and broad acre development while still maintaining the town’s character and valued landscape features.”

This consultation is a preliminary discussion with the community to inform a future Residential Development Plan Amendment (DPA). It is an opportunity for residents of Victor Harbor to help shape future housing requirements before the DPA is prepared.

“I really encourage people to take the time to find out more about the proposed changes to the City of Victor Harbor’s residential development policies and join in the discussion,” said Mayor Philp.

The proposed changes to Victor Harbor’s residential policy areas are outlined online at www.yoursay.victor.sa.gov.au/residentialreview, and also at the Civic Centre (1 Bay Road, Victor Harbor). You can also join the discussion about the proposed changes on this website through a number of online forums.

Council will also be hosting a drop-in session at the Civic Centre for members of the community to ask questions about the residential review on Friday, 29 July 2016 from 3pm to 6pm.

Have your say on Victor Harbor’s future housing needs before 5pm on Friday, 12 August 2016.
