Councils lead the way with aquatic centre project

The Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre Project has taken out the Community Partnerships and Collaboration Award at the Local Government Professionals Australia, SA Leadership Excellence Gala Awards.

The Awards, held on Friday 15 April, recognise the services and programs that local government delivers to their communities, and the Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre Project was commended for its leading approach to cross-council collaboration.

In presenting the award to the City of Victor Harbor and Alexandrina Council, the Local Government Professionals Australia (SA) highlighted the outstanding teamwork the councils demonstrated in getting the project to proceed from concept to construction in a relatively short period for such a large scale project.

City of Victor Harbor Chief Executive Officer, Graeme Maxwell and Alexandrina Council Chief Executive, Peter Dinning said they were thrilled to receive the accolade.

“After 50 years of sustained demand, the Fleurieu region south coast community will have a regional aquatic facility due to outstanding collaboration of our councils. It is fantastic that this has been recognised by our peers at a State level,” said the Chief Executives.

“Our councils are extremely proud to have brought the Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre Project to fruition to provide huge benefits to our communities.”

“It is not common for councils to build major infrastructure together but this project has shown it is possible.”

“The significant expense to construct new facilities is cost prohibitive for many councils, particularly smaller and regional councils. The Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre Project demonstrates that councils can consider their communities’ needs at a regional level – and we know there have been a number of councils looking to our project as a template for delivering joint infrastructure.”

The project will now be showcased nationally as a finalist in the Community Partnerships and Collaboration category of the Local Government Professionals Australia Federation Awards. The Federation Award winners will be announced on 6 May on the Gold Coast.

The Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre is currently on track for completion by March 2017. The project is an initiative of the Alexandrina and City of Victor Harbor councils, with funding support of $7.5 million from the Australian Government, $500,000 from the State Government and a generous land donation from Beyond Today.
