Winners of the 2016 Citizen of the Year Awards announced

The City of Victor Harbor is pleased to announce the winners of the 2016 Citizen of the Year Awards.

  • Citizen of the Year – Maureen Moores
  • Young Citizen of the Year – Laura McLeod
  • Community Event of the Year – Granite Community Band’s Sensory Friendly Inclusive Concert

2016 Citizen of the Year Award Winners

Maureen Moores, recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award, has been working as the School Chaplain at Victor Harbor R-7 School for the past 16 years and is the longest serving primary school chaplain in South Australia. Maureen was particularly commended for her work supporting local families, students and staff, running a breakfast club at the school,  organising food hampers for families in need and advocating for victims of abuse in court.

The 2016 recipient of the Young Citizen of the Year award, Laura McLeod, has been described as a person who just wants to help others and was particularly acknowledged for her involvement in community groups over the years including the Southern Fleurieu Youth Advisory Committee and the Granite Community Band.

Laura was also instrumental in the success of the Granite Community Band’s Sensory Friendly Inclusive Concert which was named the 2016 Community Event of the Year. The event was the first of its kind on the Fleurieu, and was well received by the community.

The Granite Community Band saw the need to provide the community with a disability friendly musical event that allowed people with disabilities to enjoy music in their own unique way without judgement or behavioural expectations. The concert was welcoming to all but particularly catered to individuals with sensory sensitivity. The event was such a success that a second Sensory Friendly Inclusive Concert is due to be held on 20 December at 2pm at the Victor Harbor Lutheran Church.

City of Victor Harbor Mayor Graham Philp congratulated the winners and commended them on their outstanding contribution to the community.

“Maureen Moores, Laura McLeod and the Granite Community Band have made an outstanding contribution to our community, and I congratulate and commend them for their extraordinary efforts,” said Mayor Philp.

Mayor Philp said the quality of nominations were again of a high standard.

“There were a number of worthy candidates for these awards which is reflective of the Victor Harbor community,” said Mayor Philp.

The 2016 Citizen of the Year Awards will be formally presented at the City of Victor Harbor’s Australia Day Celebrations on 26 January 2016.
