It’s time to start thinking about council elections

Make a difference: Council elections 2018

Council elections are held every four years. The next election will take place in November 2018.

There are two ways you can make a difference through council elections – by nominating for a position on council or by voting for a candidate who represents your views.

Voting in council elections is open to a broader range of people than State and Federal elections. Even if you are not an Australian citizen, or not on the State Electoral Roll you can vote in a council election as long as you are above 18 years of age and have lived in the council area for more than one month.

You can also vote in a council election if you own a rateable property in the area, regardless of whether you live in it. Another important difference is that businesses and body-corporates can vote in council elections.

For more information about eligibility and to obtain a voter registration form for the supplementary roll go to www.victor.sa.gov.au/elections or contact our Senior Rates Officer on (08) 8551 0500.

Key dates:

Roll close – 5pm on Friday, 10 August 2018
Nominations open – Tuesday, 4 September 2018
Nominations close – 12 noon on Tuesday, 18 September 2018
Mail out of voting materials – Monday, 22 October to Friday, 26 October 2018
Close of voting – 5pm on Friday, 9 November 2018

Have your say on the draft 2018/19 budget

Share your thoughts on the draft annual business plan and budget

The City of Victor Harbor has released its draft 2018/19 Annual Business Plan and Budget for community feedback.

The $34.7 million budget aims to balance community needs against cost of living pressures, while minimising rate increases.  Council is proposing a capital works program worth $7.4 million, and $27.3 million operating expenditure resulting in a deficit of just under $201,000.

Significant projects within the draft budget include the delivery of Stage 2 of the Mainstreet Precinct Master Plan which will transform the northern end of Ocean Street, upgrade of Victor Harbor’s premier playground at George T Fisher Reserve, Stage 3 of the Waitpinga Road reconstruction, and commencement of works for the Adelaide Road corridor footpath and crossing master plan.

The draft budget shows council rates increasing on average by 3.5% across all rating categories. For residential ratepayers this will mean an average increase of $67 compared to last year.

To find out more about what is proposed and to have your say visit www.yoursay.victor.sa.gov.au or collect a hard copy information pack from the Civic Centre (1 Bay Road, Victor Harbor).

There is an opportunity to ask questions, get more information or make a verbal submission on the draft plan at a public information session on Thursday, 7 June 2018 from 6.30pm at the Civic Centre.
