Flourishing on the Fleurieu

Flourishing on the Fleurieu Festival 2018

This popular Festival, which is held every two years, celebrates retirement and showcases how our community flourishes. It aims to promote health and wellbeing, and facilitate social connection.

This year the Festival provided an exciting new program where communities across the Fleurieu region came alive. The emphasis was on ‘exploring possibilities’ for getting involved in your local community.

The Festival was hosted during Active Ageing Week from 23 to 29 September 2018. Community groups based in Alexandrina, Victor Harbor, Yankalilla and Kangaroo Island council areas hosted events and activities in their local community that aimed to encourage new people to get involved.  For more details, see the program below.

Dementia Friendly Communities

What is a Dementia Friendly Community?

A dementia-friendly community is a place where people living with dementia are supported to live a high quality of life with meaning, purpose and value. This means recognising the need for a person with dementia to continue to participate in the community through activities they enjoy, whether through employment, volunteering or social activities. Each dementia-friendly community will look different, but may include:

New Online Resource - Creating Dementia Friendly Communities in the Southern Fleurieu

Following community consultation, several exciting initiatives are currently underway to help create dementia friendly communities across the Southern Fleurieu region.  The Southern Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island Taskforce has established a Dementia Action Group to drive local efforts towards creating dementia friendly communities.

One initiative by the group is the online register  of local dementia services and information.  This register consists of two electronic noticeboards.

One board contains information about services available in the Southern Fleurieu region for people experiencing dementia and their carers. https://trello.com/b/uQSkq1av

The other board provides details of information and training workshops for professionals working in the area of dementia, training courses for those who are directly caring for someone with dementia; and also community education courses for local businesses, volunteers and the community in general.  https://trello.com/b/9DR10CYG

If you know of additional services or information available to support people living with dementia and their carers in the local community which could be added to these noticeboards please contact Michelle Fuller on 8551 0571 or via email mfuller@victor.sa.gov.au
